1752 Speedwell

Captain: Jos. Willson
From: Rotterdam 16 May 1751
Arrival: Halifax

Left with 216 passengers. Arrived with 269 passengers. Thirteen people died during the voyage (6 %).

Most of the passengers on this ship came from the duchy of Montbeliard in France, although there were also a number from Hamburg and a few from other parts of Germany. The names on the reconstructed list have been rearranged according to their place of origin from the southwest to northeast.

It is not possible to identify all the people on the ship because often a family would take an older parent or step children who are not easy to identify in the available sources, however all those in each household were listed under "Freight". The first four numbers in the freight column represents the number of people in the household. The first number is the adult men, the second number the adult women, the third number the children who were charged a half-freight (4-14 years old), and the fourth number the children who went free (under 4 years old). The fifth number was the total number of freights the family was owing for passage. The sixth number was the total number of persons (heads) in the household.

The place of origin was generally the state, province, or city-state, however in some cases a town was listed (or the town might have been a small duchy or independent town in 1753). The actual towns of origin of these people will be verified in the future and updated on this site as time permits.
