Philipp SCHUTZ 1st (Hunter Lists #707J)
Philipp SCHUTZ 2nd the widow Catherine (Hunter Lists #708) The Hunter
Secretaries appear to have mixed up the entries for these apparently two
Philip1 Schutzes - both of whom seem to have md. women named Catharina (HJ).
Several potential 1709ers, who could have been either #707 or #708, were
found in Germany: 1) a Joh. Philipp Schutz, s/o Joh. Christoffel Schutz -
citizen and joiner here, md. Anna Catharina, d/o Joh. Reinhard Wilhelm, 26
Jan 1706 at 6361 Reichelsheim/Wetterau; and 2) Philipp Schutz and wife Maria
Catharina had ch. Anna Ottilia bpt. 1702, Joh. Philipp Jacob bpt. 1704, and
Johann Henrich bpt. 1707 at 6761 Dielkirchen. Knittle reports that Philips
Schuts, his wife, and 4-ch., were in the 5th party of Palatines in Holland.
#707 Philipp Schutz made his initial appearance on the Hunter Lists 1 July
1710 with 4 persons over 10 yrs. He was called Philipp Schutz 2d on 4 Aug
1710 with 2 persons over 10 and 1 under 10 yrs. Philipp Schutz had 4 persons
over 10 yrs. and 1 under 10 on 4 Oct - 1710, and Catharina Schutzin was
recorded with 3 persons over 10 yrs. on 24 June 1711. Philipp Schutz, WidW
1st was noted with 3 over 10 and 1 under 10 on the cumulative entry fcr 24
Dec 1711, and Catharina Schutzin was registered with 2 persons over 10 and 1
under 10 yrs. in N.Y. City 25 March 1712, the entry labelled for over
omitted subs(istence).
#708 Philpp Schutz was called the 2d on 4 July 1710 with 3 persons over 13
and 1 under 1G yrs. Philipp Schutz was given subsistence for 2 persons over
10 and 1 under 10 on 31 Dec 1710, and Catharina Schutzin was noted with 3
persons over 10 yrs. and 1 under 10 on 29 Sept 1711. By studying the
juxtaposition of names near #707 and #708, it is obvious the compilers of
the Hunter Lists confused the two emigrants (HJ). However, the two emigrant
Philipp3 Schutz families ended up in different parts of N.Y. colony, making
the separation of the families a bit easier:
One of the families remained in the N.Y. City area. Maria Cath Schutz, Wid.,
aged 40, was in N.Y. City in 1710/11 (Palatines In N.Y. City). She joined
the N.Y. City Ref. Church in 1713.
Ch.:
-
Johann Valentin3, the Hans Valentine Schutz
aged 17 listed in N.Y. City in 1710/11 /Paiatines In N.Y. City).
-
Maria Catharina2, listed as aged 12 in N.Y.
City in 1710/ 11 (Palatines in N.Y. City). Mary Catha Schutsen aged 12, d/o
Mary Kathe Schutsen, was bound to Thos. Bayeux of N.Y. 23 March 171i
(Apprenticeship Lists).
-
Johann Henrich2, the John Henrich Schutz aged
3 noted in N.Y. City in 171C/11 (Palatines In N.Y. City); note how this
child's age matches tne 1707 bpt. at Dielkirchen (HJ).
The other familv went up the Hudson River. Catha. Schutz: 1 woman was in
Ulster Co. in; 1710/11 (West Camp Census). Anna Catharina Schutz sp.
Mattheus Schlermmer in 1714 (West Camp Luth. Chbk.). Catharina Schutzin was
noted at Beckmansland ca. 1?16/17 (Simmendinger Register). Perhaps one of
these families was related to the Anna Eva and Justina Margareta Scheet who
joined the N.Y. City Ref. Church.
